808 Brown Bag To Stardom has been Hawaii’s official high school talent contest for 25 years. Since 1980 BBTS has created more local, national, and international stars than any music event in the State of Hawaii. High schools would hold annual talent contest and the winners from each high school would attend a statewide contest and challenge for first place trophies in several music and performing categories. Through the years many of Hawaii’s high school students were discovered through this annual program and went on to have successful careers in show biz.

Glen Medeiros, Na Leo Pilimehana, Kapena, Tia Carrera, Yuna Ito, Tani Lynn, Ryde or Die Movement, Damon Williams, Jasmine Trias, and the list goes on and on of Hawaii’s high school students who went on to have international success.

After 20 years as the official high school talent contest Brown Bags To Stardom ended in 2000.

In 2006, Johnny Kai Productions, revived Brown Bags To Stardom after a 5 year hiatus and converted Brown Bags To Stardom to a music video contest for high school kids. Produce a music video with an original song, air it on Oceanic Cable’s popular OC16 Channel and people can vote using text messaging, online ballots at www.brownbagstostardom.com, use your interactive television remote, and finally use the printed voting ballots in the weekly issues of MidWeek that is distributed throughout Hawaii.

In 2008, Johnny Kai Productions, opened Brown Bags To Stardom to high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in the State of Hawaii using the original format of “live talent” contest. Winners from each school will attend the annual talent contest at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, Hawaii. The upcoming event is February 28th, 2009 at the Blaisdell Center Arena. Kickoff with the Elementary School Division at Noon!
