Pacific Golden Plover

The Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva), known as Kolea in the Hawaiian language, is a frequent visitor to the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months. They are shore birds that fly long distances between wintering grounds and nesting grounds. Pacific Golden Plovers who winter in Hawai’i must fly over 3,000 miles to their nesting grounds in Alaska. They typically leave the islands for this journey around April 25 of each year.

The Pacific Golden Plover is frequently found in play fields, lawns, and other low cut grassy areas. They can be territorial, but can also be found foraging in non-territorial groups.
