Surfing was more than just riding waves to the early Hawaiians. Surfing was the center of social and ritual activities that began with the selection of the tree from which the board would be carved. These boards were then used in legendary surfing contests for ali’i.

Waikiki, with it’s reliable waves, is a good choice for the beginning surfer to catch a wave. The Waikiki “beach boys” rose to fame in the 1930s when they took charge of the beach and waves. The beach boys still give lessons today in Waikiki.

If you want to learn to surf Waikiki is the perfect place to start. The beach has plenty of surf schools, and the beach boys are terrific teachers.
