Record Number Of Hawaiian Monk Seal Births.
May 17th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Hawaii News
This week the third pup of the year was born on a North Shore Beach on O’ahu. The previous record was two pups in a season. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is considered an endangered species with estimated population of fewer than 1,200. The seals usually give birth between February and July, with a peak between April and June. This year also marks a record the total number of pups born in the main Hawaiian Islands since the beginning of the year to 10, compared to seven at this time last year, which saw a total of 13 newborn pups.
It’s sure to be a busy pupping season.
