Tex Drive-In is located in the small town of Honoka’a, just a
short drive North of Hilo, on the Haumakua coast. The
Tex Drive-In opened 1969 by the portuguese Texeria family. In just a short time the
Tex Drive-In became famous for their malasadas and local style food.

When you walk into the
Tex Drive-In you find locals and tourist a like savoring the flavors of the ono food selection. You’ll find all the familiar plate lunch items, but the one thing that you can’t miss are their famous malasadas. A malasada is a Portuguese confection related to the doughnut. Malasadas are made of egg-sized balls of yeast dough that are deep-fried in oil and coated with granulated sugar. Traditional malasadas contain neither holes nor fillings, but some varieties of malasadas are filled with flavored cream or other fillings. In 1878, Portuguese laborers from the Azores came to Hawaii to work in the plantations. These immigrants brought their traditional foods with them, and today there are numerous bakeries in the islands specializing in malasadas. Tex Drive In has the best malasadas on the Big Island.

If you’re in the mood for something with a little more protein why not try the loco moco. They serve their loco moco in a bowl heavy on the gravy, soupy style. This dish will stick to your ribs, and leave you full for the day.If you’re visiting Hilo, make sure to take a drive up to Tex Drive-In. The food is worth the drive, and the view of the Pacific Ocean from the dinning room is a bonus. Tex Drive-In used to have a location in Pahala, but sold it last year. If you’re stuck on the mainland and craving Tex Malasadas they now have their
Malasada Mix for sale online.Tex Drive-In
