honoapi’ilani highway

Just past Keone’o'io in South Maui a path cuts thought the barren ‘a’a lava field. This path was carved out four centuries ago by workers creating a road for their king. This path is a remaining fragment of a road system begun by Pi’ilani, a chief who ruled six West Maui bays know as honoapi’ilani. While the roads were begun by Pi’ilani it was his son Kiha-a-Pi’ilani who extended the alaloa (long road) all the way around the island.Pi’ilani is remembered today in the names of two major roadways: The Honoapi’ilani Highway which extends along the western edge of West Maui, and the Pi’ilani near Kihei. Modern development and roadways have covered up most of the roads created by Pi’ilani and Kiha-a-Pi’ilani, but remnants of the King’s Highway can still be found.
