Halema’uma’u Explosion
Mar 21st, 2008 | By admin | Category: Hawaii News
Kilauea is not know for explosive behavior, but yesterday the mold was broken. Kilauea’s Halemaumau Crater produced an explosion so powerful that it sent boulders flying over a 75-acre area. Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory initially thought it was an earthquake. They later determined that pent-up gas pressure caused an explosion. No lava was released at that time.
